Barakah Nuclear Plant Unit 1 marks one year of operation

WAM

The Emirates Nuclear Energy Corporation (ENEC) has marked one year since commercial operations at Unit 1 of the Barakah Nuclear Energy Plant started.

Since last April, Unit 1, located at the Al Dhafra region of  Abu Dhabi, has generated more than 10.5 Terawatt hours of clean electricity, powering homes and businesses across the UAE, and enabling businesses to become more sustainable.

Unit 1 has also prevented the release of more than five million tonnes of carbon emissions, equivalent to the emissions of more than one million cars driven for a year.

The Barakah Plant is leading the largest decarbonisation effort in the Arab World and sustainably and securely powering the UAE on its path to Net-Zero.

Meanwhile, the regular nuclear refuelling phase and maintenance of Unit 1 has started, according to the Federal Authority for Nuclear Regulation.

During this phase, Nawah Energy will add new nuclear fuel assemblies, while maintenance and testing of power production equipment, safety-related systems and others will be carried out.

FANR is overseeing the project, including review and inspection programmes, to ensure all work is carried out to their regulations.

Following the completion of the refuelling phase, Unit 1 will return to operations after receiving clearance from the regulatory authority.
