Temperatures in the UAE will begin to drop over the next five days, the National Centre of Meteorology (NCM) said, after the country marked a heat record for the month of May.

According to NCM, the country recorded 51.6 degree Celsius in some parts over the weekend, marking the highest temperature for May in 22 years.

Speaking to ARN News, Esra Al Naqpi, NCM weather forecaster, said it's usually in June and July that the country records highs of 50 degree Celsius, and not in May.

She explained that the unusual rise in temperature is driven by "southerly winds" and a "warm air mass over the country".

Al Naqbi said the temperatures will drop over the coming days, with no forecast for rain.
